Services Facilitating Fulfilling Lives
At ICS, we envision a world in which people listen to and respect other’s views, in which ideas and feelings are communicated honestly and with clarity, and where the “soft skills” of human communication are considered the hardest but most important. Our goal is to move forward on our mission by affirming, asserting and accommodating; by visiting other people’s worlds, across town or across the world; by grappling with economic justice and environmental justice issues that pull us apart; by using music to enable those disabled by dementia to reconnect with others.
We work together as ICSD, Inc., a non-profit 501©3 Corporation.
Our group presents to groups large and small through remote learning. Read more.
ICS helps building communications skills through publications and training, often using cases. For a full list of ICS publications, see our Shop page.
Carolyn Shadle, PhD
Through ICS, Inc. I provide services that facilitate a fulfilling life. I’m retired from university-based adult and continuing education, where I led and administered leadership development, business and finance management. During my university career I held administrative positions at California State University, Long Beach, and San Jose; the University of Denver College of Business; and the State University of New York (Buffalo and Empire State College).
Throughout my career I have authored academic papers, written and published for 15 years an internationally-distributed parenting communication news magazine, written and edited other newsletters, and created training designs, a book, game, and two adult training manuals. [Read more]
Since the ‘70s I have been committed to building a sustainable world through involvement in various environmental action groups, including as a member of the Long Beach Sustainable City Commission and the World Resources Simulation Center and the Global Energy Network Initiative, based in San Diego, CA. My special interest is enabling change to take place through better communication, understanding and collaboration.
I am equally committed to working through the political system for economic justice, and addressing the growing wealth divide.
I studied at the University of Geneva, Switzerland and hold a bachelors degree in history from The College of Wooster in Ohio, masters in religious education from Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and a Ph.D. in organizational and interpersonal communication from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

I enjoy delighting audiences of all ages with my sense of humor and what people call my “esprit de joie.” I am a vocalist and a poet, enjoying humorous and serious creations. Through academic writing, case studies, as well as stories, poetry and music, I’ve shared my experience and knowledge in interpersonal communication, organizational communication, oral interpretation of literature, public speaking and debate. I work with seniors in rollicking Sing-Alongs. I delight in writing poetry.
For nearly 30 years, I served as Professor of Communication at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh following years teaching at Hamline University and as a high school English teacher, as well as drama and debate coach, in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
During my career, I’ve authored six books and presented at numerous communication conventions.
I have served as President of the New York Speech Communication Association and editor of its newsletter. I hold a bachelors degree and a masters degree in communication from the University of Wisconsin, a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Minnesota, and have done post-doctoral work at the State University of New York at Buffalo and in London, England.
