We are Carolyn Shadle, PhD, and John Meyer, PhD.
Let us introduce ourselves.
I have spent most of my life equipping adults with the skills and tools to build effective organizations, a sustainable environment, and healthy relationships. I have written numerous publications, hosted a TV interview show, and offered training in communication, planning, and change for corporate, public and non-profit audiences, as well as for parents and grandparents. I’ve had the privilege of traveling widely, offering training overseas as well as throughout the USA.
Through ICS, Inc. I provide services that facilitate a fulfilling life. I’m retired from university-based adult and continuing education, where I led and administered leadership development, business and finance management, and “soft skills” (the hardest). During my university career I held administrative positions at California State University, Long Beach, and San Jose; the University of Denver College of Business; and the State University of New York (Buffalo and Empire State College).
Throughout my career I have authored academic papers, written and published for 15 years an internationally-distributed parenting communication news magazine, written and edited other newsletters, and created training designs, a book, game, and two adult training manuals. Recent newsletters as well as communication cases published in Trends can be seen on links found on the SERVICES>WRITING page. Published items can be seen on the PRODUCTS page.
Since the ‘70s I have been committed to building a sustainable world through involvement in various environmental action groups, including as a member of the Long Beach Sustainable City Commission and the World Resources Simulation Center and the Global Energy Network Initiative, based in San Diego, CA. My special interest is enabling change to take place through better communication, understanding and collaboration.
I am equally committed to the moral imperative that society’s “winners” help pay for a social safety net, which means working through the political system for economic justice, addressing the growing wealth divide.
I studied at the University of Geneva, Switzerland and hold a bachelors degree in history from The College of Wooster in Ohio, masters in religious education from Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and a Ph.D. in organizational and interpersonal communication from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
(Elsewhere on this website I have shared the path which I took that brought me to focus on interpersonal communication. If you’re interested, click here to read.)
John L. Meyer, Ph.D
I enjoy delighting audiences of all ages with my sense of humor and what people call my “esprit de joie.” I am a vocalist and a poet, enjoying humorous and serious creations. Through academic writing, case studies, as well as stories, poetry and music, I’ve shared my experience and knowledge in interpersonal communication, organizational communication, oral interpretation of literature, public speaking and debate. My work with seniors can be found on the SING-ALONG pages. You will find some of my poetry on the POETRY page.
Some of my preparation for work in communication and relationship building is born out in my gregariousness. As a traveler and student of Spanish, I enjoy affirming connections with people of all ages and cultures.
For nearly 30 years, I served as Professor of Communication at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh following years teaching at Hamline University and as a high school English teacher, as well as drama and debate coach, in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
During my career, I’ve authored six books and presented at numerous communication conventions. These works can be seen on the PRODUCTS page. Recent communication cases published in Trends can be seen on links found on the WRITING page.
I have served as President of the New York Speech Communication Association and editor of its newsletter. I hold a bachelors degree and a masters degree in communication from the University of Wisconsin, a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Minnesota, and have done post-doctoral work at the State University of New York at Buffalo and in London, England.
